Newton's Second Law

2. Why the Formula Works
The relationship is built from definitions and conservation reasoning:
- Choose the object or objects included in the system.
- Draw only external forces acting on that system and add them as vectors.
- Newton's second law converts the net external force into center-of-mass acceleration.

A 4 kg cart experiences 12 N net force to the right. Find its acceleration.
Answer: The acceleration is 12/4=3 m/s² to the right.
Investigation idea: Vary hanging mass in a cart-pulley system and test the proportionality between net force and acceleration.
Common trap: A Newton's-third-law pair acts on different objects, so the two forces do not cancel on one free-body diagram.
