Frequency and Period of SHM

A restoring interaction produces periodic motion whose graphs, energy transfers, and parameters are mutually consistent.

1. Topic Lens

Frequency and Period of SHM is studied through oscillations. Connect the system boundary, interacting parts, and measurable evidence before applying a formula.

\[T=2\pi\sqrt{\frac{m}{k}}\]

2. Why the Formula Works

The relationship is built from definitions and conservation reasoning:

  1. Combine Hooke's law F=-kx with ma to obtain a=-kx/m.
  2. SHM has acceleration a=-ω²x, so ω²=k/m.
  3. Period is one cycle of phase, giving T=2π/ω.
\[\omega=\sqrt{\frac{k}{m}},\quad T=\frac{2\pi}{\omega}\]

3. Detailed Visual Model

Frequency and Period of SHM: an original pixel-style model. Use it as a schematic, not a literal scale drawing.

4. Worked Example and Lab Link

For m=1 kg and k=4 N/m, find the spring oscillator's period.

Answer: T=2π√(1/4)=π s.

Investigation idea: Measure period while changing mass or amplitude, then decide where the ideal SHM model fails.

Common trap: The pendulum period formula requires small angles; maximum speed occurs at equilibrium, not at the endpoints.

Checkpoint · Topic 7.2

Explain how frequency and period of shm supports or limits this conclusion: T=2π√(1/4)=π s.
