2. Why the Formula Works

The relationship is built from definitions and conservation reasoning:

  1. Each linear chain begins with separate monomers.
  2. Every condensation reaction joins two pieces and reduces the number of pieces by one.
  3. Joining n pieces into one chain therefore requires n-1 joins.

4. Worked Example and Lab Link

A peptide is assembled from 8 amino acids. How many peptide bonds and water molecules are produced?

Answer: Seven bonds form and seven water molecules are released.

Investigation idea: Compare water movement on wax paper and clean glass, then connect shape to cohesion and adhesion.

Common trap: Do not treat hydrogen bonds as covalent bonds or assume every carbon-containing molecule is a polymer.
