Cell Communication

2. Why the Formula Works
The relationship is built from definitions and conservation reasoning:
- Let each activated relay molecule activate A molecules at the next step.
- After one step the response is R_0A; repeated multiplication gives R_0A^n.
- Feedback can change A or stop the cascade, so the model has biological limits.

A four-stage cascade activates 3 targets per active molecule. What is the ideal amplification from one receptor?
Answer: The idealized response is 3^4=81 activated targets.
Investigation idea: Model a signaling cascade with colored tokens and test how blocking one relay changes downstream output.
Common trap: Signal amplification is not unlimited, and correlation between a signal and response does not prove the pathway step.
